HARMAN and AWS showcase technological work during the AWS "Software Defined Vehicle" online conference

STAMFORD, Conn. --HARMAN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. focused on connected technologies and solutions for automotive, consumer, and enterprise markets, today announced support for the AWS for Automotive initiative from Amazon Web Services (AWS) with the HARMAN Over-the-Air (OTA) software update solution designed to help Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) meet increased security needs in their vehicles. The solution, which was showcased at the AWS "Software Defined Vehicle" online conference, enables OEMs to deliver new consumer experiences throughout the life of a vehicle.

"Today, rising security threats and a rapidly expanding landscape can make managing software challenging for OEMs. Our objective at HARMAN is to take the friction out of that process," said Michal Geva, Vice President and General Manager, OTA and Cybersecurity at HARMAN. "The HARMAN OTA solution streamlines security management with an end-to-end secure software update campaign that gives automakers confidence in their solutions today and flexibility to safely add new features down the road."

HARMAN OTA enables automakers and Tier-1 suppliers to adapt to an evolving market landscape by securely managing all in-vehicle software components, including firmware, applications, configurations, settings, and maps on head units, TCUs (Telematics Control Units) and ECUs (Electronic Control Units)—anywhere and at any time. Using the HARMAN OTA solution and AWS, updates can be pushed to millions of vehicles in the field easily, efficiently, and securely.

AWS for Automotive is an initiative featuring services and solutions from AWS and AWS Partners, built specifically for automotive customers. The initiative makes it easier for automotive customers to select the right tools and partners for their highest-priority workloads across the automotive ecosystem. For customers looking to accelerate deployments with solution-specific support, AWS for Automotive also identifies dedicated AWS automotive industry specialists, AWS Professional Services teams, and leading AWS Partners in each solution area.

The HARMAN OTA solution will be on display at events throughout this year, allowing attendees to receive an interactive demo that showcases the management of all in-vehicle software components. The demo focuses on the creation and execution of a secure end-to-end software update campaign showcasing how HARMAN’s market-leading OTA solution makes it easy to add new features and functionality post-production.

WHO IS WINNING THE RACE FOR CONNECTED CARS WITH C-V2X TECHNOLOGY?

Innovation and new technologies are ushering in a new era of smart transportation, with a focus on enhanced safety, efficiency and connected-in car experience.

Imagine you are driving around the city, and your car helps you identify and navigate to the nearest available parking spot or notifies you to slow down after predicting possible collisions at blind spots. Today, smart cars, equipped with modern-day technologies, can sense and analyze their surroundings, communicate with mobility users, and warn against potential collisions, vulnerable road users (VRUs), inclement weather, and other road hazards.

Cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) is one such modern-day technology that has attracted global attention recently given its ability to predict possibilities around mobility safety and efficiency. It is an advanced wireless technology that enables vehicles to stay connected on the go and communicate with virtually everything around them, including other vehicles (V2V), roadside infrastructure (V2I), pedestrians (V2P), the network (V2N) and the cloud (V2C).

Vehicles embedded with C-V2X technology can proactively communicate with other vehicles and roadside infrastructure (such as traffic signals, signs and light poles) and provide us vital real-time updates on traffic movement, road condition, speed limit and weather, among others. These functionalities help predict movement and generate active alerts to avoid possible collisions while reducing traffic congestion and improving mobility on the road. Armed with advanced mobile network infrastructures, C-V2X can improve drivers’ situational awareness of upcoming hazards and VRUs even in low-visibility conditions, around corners and in non-line-of-sight scenarios.

Today, China has emerged as the global face of C-V2X technology, backed by a nationalized strategy for internet of vehicles, while its counterparts continue to debate over DSRC and C-V2X. The country expects 50% of new cars to have C-V2X pre-installed by 2025.

Our latest white paper, ‘What China Knows About C-V2X That US Companies and Governments Need to Find Out,’ sheds light on China’s industry-leading initiatives around C-V2X technology to ensure enhanced mobility safety and efficiency on its roads. Click here to download the white paper.
