APTIV WINS CLEPA INNOVATION AWARD FOR ITS ANDROID INFOTAINMENT COMPUTE PLATFORM
>> Industry-first solution provides Volvo customers with seamless, built-in access to Google’s vast ecosystem of apps and services
>> Integrated over-the-air software ensures the system remains up-to-date over the lifetime of the vehicle
DUBLIN – Aptiv PLC, a global technology company focused on making mobility safer, greener, and more connected, today announced it has been awarded the CLEPA Innovation Award for work in leading the development and integration of the world’s first vehicle infotainment solution powered by Android Automotive OS with Google apps and services built-in. Aptiv won the award in the category Connectivity.
Presented by the European Association of Automotive Suppliers, the CLEPA Innovation Awards recognizes the excellence of the automotive supplier’s industry in the fields of Environment, Safety, Cooperation, and Connectivity & Automation.
The Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 are the first vehicles to leverage Aptiv’s Android Infotainment Compute Platform to natively support built-in access to services such as Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play Store. Further, the Volvo XC40 is also the first Volvo to receive real-time over the air (OTA) software and operating system updates, as well as automotive apps created by the global Android developer community. By combining Android Automotive OS with OTA updates, the vehicle can evolve and improve over time, rather than being at its peak when it leaves the factory. This means the extensive catalog of popular apps from Google, Volvo Cars, and third-party app developers will only continue to grow.
“This CLEPA award underscores Aptiv’s leadership in collaborating with automakers to develop and integrate the software-enabled features consumers want,” said Kevin Clark, president and CEO, Aptiv. “Our expertise in software and services allows us to seamlessly integrate the Android operating system in the vehicle, while our agile development methodology is unlocking new flexible business models and value for our customers.”
Android Automotive Transforms Vehicle Infotainment
Vehicle infotainment systems have always faced several challenges. They offer a limited number of proprietary applications. They cannot be easily updated. And they are not always as intuitive to use as other modern devices, such as smartphones.
