HOW SAMSUNG MEMORY IS FUELING THE EVOLUTION OF AUTOMOTIVE

As the world looks toward a future of safer and more intelligent mobility, the automotive sector is being fundamentally reshaped to incorporate an expanding range of smart and versatile driving solutions.

When it comes to this development, three main focuses for the industry are the realization of autonomous driving capabilities, comprehensive in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) connectivity, all of which require powerful memory solutions for their realization. Thus, as the industry looks to take automotive experiences to the next level, Samsung Memory is laying the foundation upon which the smart driving features of tomorrow will be built.

A Three-pronged Evolution

Autonomous driving capabilities are not expected to manifest as an overnight transformation, but rather as a gradual, step-by-step process, with the stages of advancement being numbered from one to five. For level one and two autonomous driving, Samsung solutions underpin cameras, sensors and radar for distributed systems that enable features like driver assistance and autonomous emergency brakes. For levels three, four and five autonomous driving, Samsung memory supports vehicle systems that empower functionality such as fusion, vision computing and HD maps. In 2020 level three autonomous driving solutions are equipped with 4GB of DRAM and 128GB of NAND, which is expected to increase further over the next decade.

Samsung memory solutions are also being brought to bear on the next generation of in-vehicle infotainment systems. Featuring one microcontroller and one system on chip integrated circuit for each electronic module, Samsung’s E-Cockpit system with cluster display is reshaping information and entertainment delivery within the vehicle. Into the future, the current capacities of 8GB for DRAM and 256GB for NAND in Samsung's IVI systems are expected to increase alongside the relevant technological advancements.

The uptake of advanced vehicle connectivity is also expected to ramp up in the coming years, with solutions underpinned by telematics and 5G connectivity. Increases in data traffic and new legislation have also given vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and V2X implementation a boost, with the US NHTSA proposing a rule that would require all new vehicles to feature V2V communication capabilities by 2023. Samsung’s central gateway is providing powerful V2X capabilities amid this climate, with the telematics-empowered version of the solution featuring 2GB of DRAM and 32GB of NAND.

Better Memory for Smarter Mobility

And as this array of next-generation automotive technology emerges, Samsung’s comprehensive automotive memory portfolio is facilitating the industry’s advancement. Across the board, Samsung offers a wide range of scalable automotive solutions, the development of which has been based on the company’s broad range of expertise and experience in the automotive sector.

As the industry looks to realize the various stages of autonomous driving, Samsung is underpinning the requisite capabilities with high performance DRAM including LPDDR4x, LPDDR5, GDDR6 and HBM2E, in addition to the high performance, high density storage offered by UFS3.1 and the PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD. When it comes to the next generation of IVI, Samsung is empowering the systems of the future with high performance DRAM such as LPDDR5 and the scalable storage density offered by eMMC5.1 and UFS3.1. Last, but not least, the telematics and gateway solutions that are empowering the future of connectivity are making use of Samsung’s DDR3 and LPDDR4 low density DRAM and eMMC5.1 low density storage, while LPDDR4 high performance DRAM and high performance, low density storage such as UFS3.1 are providing the foundation for next-level vision and advanced driver assistance systems.

Smarter Mobility on the Horizon

Comprehensive smart mobility will not come easy, as the automotive industry will need to provide the seamless connectivity, integration and real-time responses necessary to ensure that the sector can deliver solutions that are both reliable and safe. Thus, as the automotive sector lays out plans to make driving smarter and safer for all, companies need to ensure that they are providing cutting-edge solutions that can deliver to the highest standard.

Samsung is engaged in hundreds of automotive projects and applies its long-standing industry expertise to work with a multitude of different car brands. With dedicated DRAM and NAND fabrication facilities, in-house solutions for full automotive line-ups and a global, dedicated automotive team, Samsung is ideally positioned to provide quality and reliability throughout the sector. What’s more, Samsung’s comprehensive technical support and troubleshooting services allow it to ensure that it remains alongside clients every step of the way.

And so, as the industry goes through the phases of autonomous vehicle development, establishes the next stage of in-vehicle infotainment and develops sophisticated vehicle connectivity, Samsung Memory is doing its part by providing its expansive, high performance automotive portfolio and global expertise to ensure that the sector is underpinned by the very best in memory.
