GROWING THE C-V2X ECOSYSTEM AND PREPARING IT FOR COMMERCIAL READINESS IN 2019
At Qualcomm, we have a proven track record for inventing breakthrough technologies, collaborating with established and nascent ecosystem players, and driving innovation across a wide range of industries. From 3G to 4G to 5G, our technology continues to change the world in astounding ways. As a leader in the wireless space, it’s our privilege to collaborate with some of the industry’s best and brightest. Building on our 15 years of automotive telematics leadership, we continue our strategic engagement in automotive with Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology.
In my previous blog post, I discussed how we are building a comprehensive ecosystem that is striving to make C-V2X ready for commercial deployment in vehicles. That ecosystem includes global automobile OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, test equipment vendors, system integrators, chipset manufacturers, telecom suppliers, traffic signal suppliers, road operators, and wireless operators.
Additionally, we worked with global carmakers and suppliers on several trials, using our first announced C-V2X commercial solution, the Qualcomm 9150 C-V2X chipset and reference design, including Audi in Germany, PSA in France, Ford in the U.S., and Nissan in Japan. We also announced several collaborations with automotive Tier-1 suppliers, including LG Electronics and Continental.
Today, Qualcomm Technologies announced that we are working with leading carmakers and automotive suppliers to accelerate the commercial introduction of C-V2X technology using the Qualcomm 9150 C-V2X chipset solution. Automotive suppliers and ecosystem participants have expressed their support for the deployment of C-V2X technology in upcoming production vehicles and roadside units (RSU) starting in 2019. This includes:
>> Carmakers: since the introduction of the Qualcomm 9150 C-V2X solution, six global carmakers have expressed their support for the deployment of C-V2X.
>> Tier-1 suppliers: LG Electronics, Continental, Ficosa-Panasonic, Lear and Valeo.
>> Cellular module manufacturers: Gemalto, LG Innotek, Quectel, Sierra Wireless, Telit, WNC and ZTE.
>> Global software solution providers: Cohda Wireless, Commsignia and Savari. Working with these V2X software stack and application providers, Qualcomm Technologies plans to leverage ETSI-ITS, IEEE WAVE, and SAE standardized protocols and applications into commercial C-V2X deployments.
>> System integrators: Sasken and Thundersoft. Working with these system integrators and software providers, Qualcomm Technologies plans to leverage the decade-long investment in ITS software with the C-V2X radio to connect vehicles, pedestrian devices, and roadside infrastructure, such as traffic signals.
Qualcomm Technologies is currently conducting C-V2X field validations with car manufacturers and automotive ecosystem participants in Germany, France, Korea, China, Japan, and the U.S. This broad ecosystem support and our accelerated technology development strengthens our expectations that C-V2X will be ready for commercial deployment in vehicles in 2019.
