ERICSSON & VOLVO: PARTNERSHIPS BUILT ON INNOVATION

With the goal of creating connected cars that make life safer, more efficient and more entertaining, Ericsson and Volvo established a partnership in late 2012. Since that time, we have built a relationship which allows each partner to focus on their individual strengths, enabling rapid co-innovation.

Today, Ericsson and Volvo continue to expand upon the possibilities of cloud-based solutions to improve traffic safety and deepen driver relationships via a wide range of infotainment, telematics and safety offerings. That includes vehicles that are increasingly defined by over-the-air (OTA) software updates.

Rapid data sharing and management is crucial to many of these innovations. Ericsson is driving the technology behind 5G mobile broadband, currently testing 5G mobile applications designed to make life easier and more efficient. As we transition into 5G connectivity, partners like Volvo rely on the solid practices and smart solutions that have made us the standard-bearer for radio connectivity around the globe.

The 3 key principles of our cross-industry partnership:

>> Conception - We always align on short and long term goals to ensure clear expectations.

>> Communication - Deeper than a customer/vendor relationship, our partnership relies on continuous communication to achieve mutual goals.

>>Collaboration - Both partners have resources devoted to expanding beyond the projects at hand, with an eye on long term industry leadership.

Transforming cars – and society

Our partnership with Volvo is an example of how we are working to realize our vision of the Networked Society, where everything that can benefit from being connected, will be connected to empower everyone, everywhere to achieve their full potential.

Connecting cars mean more than bringing the internet into vehicles. As cars become more service-oriented, relationships between drivers, passengers, cars, and automakers are changing. We help our partners, like Volvo, realize the full potential of those changes.

Cloud-based solutions for rapid innovation

The connected automotive ecosystem can incorporate any number of third-party stakeholders, including merchants, insurance companies and transport authorities. Ericsson’s cloud platform gives Volvo the power to control and manage this growing ecosystem.

Our agile cloud platform has enabled Volvo to swiftly scale up more services, in more cars and more markets. Volvo offers an exceptional package of in-car infotainment, telematics and navigation services, which began with the introduction of Spotify music streaming in 2013.

Today, Volvo also offers in-car service and maintenance scheduling, as well as a digital key that allows secure, remote, one-time access to the car, for whoever needs it. The next stage in this evolution is going beyond connected services as add-ons to the car, to over-the-air (OTA) updates that define many aspects of the cars itself, such as powertrain capabilities and safety features.

Currently, Volvo cars offers automated features such as their Cyclist Detection Auto Brake, Park Assist Pilot and Lane-keeping Aid. Volvo is kicking off their self-driving trials in 2017.

Safer and more efficient roads

The traffic ecosystem is becoming safer and more intelligent as cars communicate via the cloud with other vehicles, service providers, traffic authorities and regulators. Our developments in high-speed 5G connectivity are building towards real-time communication between cars and the connected ecosystem.

But we aren’t simply waiting for 5G to appear and be fully-functioning, we know it will be a gradual process. We help partners like Volvo move seamlessly into 5G, which will enable vast possibilities to make every journey smoother and safer.

Moving forward together

Volvo is known worldwide for human-centric design, always focused on safety and quality. This reputation is complemented by Ericsson’s expertise in global mobile solutions and digital transformation experience. Our respective strengths have enabled us to break new ground in the automotive industry over the past few years, and we look forward to the innovations to come in the future.
